The Fontaine de Falaise, renamed the Fontaine d'Arlette, is made up of a bas-relief representing the meeting of Robert the Magnificent, returning from hunting, and Arlette washing the laundry.
Legend has it that on returning from the game-filled forests, the young Duke Robert saw a young girl washing clothes at the Val d'Ante fountain at the foot of the castle. It is Arlette, daughter of Foubert, furrier merchant of the city. Robert falls in love with her and brings her to the castle. She agrees but demands to enter on horseback and through the front door. During their first night of union, Arlette is awakened by a dream: a tree springing from its entrails covered with its shadow all of Normandy, and "Great England". She tells Robert who sees it as a happy omen. Indeed, a few months after that night, a child is born, to whom Robert gives the name of Guillaume, nicknamed the Bastard.
